anyway, where was I? oh aye, this bastard.
there are a variety of things that can go wrong with any medical procedure. well fuck it, there are things that can go tits up with every aspect of your pitifully short life but people seem to clench their arses & flee in terror at the suggestion of medical fuck ups.
there are also a number of reasons why scientific papers can be discredited. fortunately the vast majority of these are filtered out by the cunts who review articles before publication in their hallowed journal of choice. unfortunately something that is harder to pick out is data manipulation; a vicious abuse of trust that essentially amounts to fraud.
when such a paper gets taken up by not only a major medical journal but subsequently the horrible associated bastards of the press it seems to have quite an effect on the credulous public. fine & upstanding newspapers carried the story on their front page, leading millions of pathetically trusting parents to deny their progeny a vaccine against common & potentially dangerous diseases.
gradually some evidence emerged that the original paper had some fucking massive flaws in it, not least of which that the principle researcher received funding from groups with interests in opposition to the vaccine. once again, the media reported this to the public & in turn they gradually stopped being such uppity wankers when it came to protecting their children.
now it seems like the argument has finally been put to rest, with the journal of original publication retracting the now thoroughly discredited paper & hoping everyone will forget this stupid fucking debacle ever happened in the first place. personally I hope for quite the opposite; it'd be much more useful for the proletariat to learn from this & to be more sceptical of scientific "findings" in the future.
it won't happen though. regardless of the efforts made by outstanding individuals such as Carl Sagan, the public remains as disastrously unaware of scientific method as it always has been.
